Nakagyo Post Office
Along Sanjo Street in mid-city, there are quite a few buildings of brick or stone which were built during Meiji, Taisho, or early Showa eras. The neo-Renaissance style Nakagyo Post Office building is one of them. Completed in 1902, it is one of the oldest post offices in Japan.
In 1974, the Government was planning to re-build the building, but such was the outcry from the general public that the facade of the original building has been conserved utilizing facade-retention techniques for the first time in Japan. The post office is still operating as one of the main post offices in this part of town.
