Kyoto Tower Seen Beyond the Eaves
The Space-Needle-like tower seen beyond the eaves of this townhouse is Kyoto Tower. The odd-looking tower, which was built in 1964, has been the subject of controversy since its planning stage. Many Kyoto people claimed that the construction was unsuitable to the ancient capital. Some people say it was designed with a Japanese candle as its motif, but the designer actually was trying to suggest a lighthouse overlooking the sea of Kyoto’s tile-roofed buildings.
Even though many Kyotoites still complain about its design, those who leave the city often say they feel “home” emerging from Kyoto Station and catching their first sight of the tower.
