 Shirakawa River in Gion

The Shirakawa River ("White River"), which originates up on Mount Hiei, flows down to the foot of the Higashiyama hills to merge with the Kamo River north of Shijo Bridge. It is a very small and shallow river known for its clear water and white granite river bed (from which it is said the name is derived). Before joining with the Kamo River it flows windingly through the Gion district, one of “old Kyoto’s” most famous entertainment districts.
