 Nijo Castle

Although the original incarnation of Nijo Castle dates back to the Ashikaga Shogunate era, the current version was built in early seventeenth century by order of the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu. Since then, it was used as the Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa Shoguns.

Although the donjon (central construction of the castle) was struck by lightning and burned down in 1750, the remaining 3,300-square-meter Ninomaru Palace, which was designated as a national treasure in 1952, is a place where one can still feel the power of the old feudal government with its walls, ceilings, and sliding doors decorated with gold-leafed paintings.
