Sakaimachi Gate, Kyoto Gyoen
Kyoto Gyoen — which is enclosed by Imadegawa Street on the north, Marutamachi Street on the south, Teramachi Street on the east, and Karasuma Street on the west — is surrounded by low stonewall and hedges. This used to be the outer confinement of the old Kyoto Imperial Palace.
At the south end, on Marutamachi Street, stands Sakaimachi Gate which functioned as one of the central gates to the palace premises. Both the Aoi and Jidai Festivals begin their parade route from this gate out of the palace park to the town.
