 Ichiriki Teahouse

With its chic vermilion noren, Ichiriki is a distinguished landmark of the Gion entertainment district. It is one of the most prestigious ochaya (teahouse), a place of entertainment with geisha, in Kyoto. Ichiriki is said to have over 300 years of history, and indeed many historical figures have visited the legendary teashop. The calligraphy on the noren reads: "ichi" (one) and "riki" (power), but can also be read as "man" or "yorozu" (ten thousand), reminiscent of its original name "yorozu-ya."
