 Gozasho Palace, Sennyuji Temple

Since its founding in 1224 when Emperor Gohorikawa made it a temple for the Imperial family, Sennyuji has been connected with Japan’s imperial family. Tombs of several past emperors are located within the temple grounds, and the small Palace was moved from the Kyoto Imperial Palace here by Emperor Meiji in 1884. The palace is still used as a place of retreat for the imperial family, with the current Emperor having visited here several times since his accession.
