 Hosei Bridge, Shinsen-en

The name of the bridge, “Hosei” or “accomplished prayer,” derives from a legend about Kobo Daishi or Kukai (774–835), the famous monk who introduced Shingon Buddhism to Japan. The legend has it that during a time of severe drought, Kukai was called on by emperor to pray for rain. So great was the monk’s spiritual power that a dragon goddess was said to have appeared from out of the pond after which huge raindrops began to fall from the sky.
