 Paper Lantern, Chion-in

This paper lantern located along the Slope for Women is decorated with the family crest of the Tokugawa family: three hollyhock leaves. The temple was originally built in memory of the founder of the Jodo-shu (Pure Land Sect) Honen. By the mid-seventeenth century, the temple had already been destroyed three times when the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu, had the temple rebuilt a final time. The temple was thereafter protected by the Tokugawa shogunate until the end of their rule.
