 Oike Street

Running east to west almost in the center of the city, Oike Street is the widest thoroughfare in Kyoto. Between Kawaramachi and Horikawa Streets is a neat business district where fairy tall zelkova trees line the sidewalks. The name of the street is said to derive from a big pond that was once supposedly located in either Shinsen-en garden or in a long-gone nobleman's palace believed to have been located around Karasuma Oike, near the Kyoto International Manga Museum.
