When approaching Tofukuji Temple from Tofukuji Station, Myoanji Temple appears on the way. This sub-temple of Tofukuji is officially known as Zenne-in and is a place where one can sometimes hear the sounds of shakuhachi flute music as the temple also serves as the headquarters of a small Zen sect that includes shakuhachi as part of its spiritual practice.
In some samurai movies, you may see monks wearing straw baskets covering up their faces and playing shakuhachi. Those monks, called komusou, are members of this Zen flute-playing tradition. The word "Myoan" means "light and dark."
